Frequently asked questions.

What is Physiotherapy?

According to the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (2012), Physiotherapy is a primary care, autonomous, client-focused health profession dedicated to improving quality of life by:

  • Promoting optimal mobility, physical activity and overall health and wellness;

  • Preventing disease, injury, and disability;

  • Managing acute and chronic conditions, activity limitations, and participation restrictions;

  • Improving and maintaining optimal functional independence and physical performance;

  • Rehabilitating injury and the effects of disease or disability with therapeutic exercise programs and other interventions; and

  • Educating and planning maintenance and support programs to prevent re-occurrence, re-injury or functional decline.

Physiotherapists analyze the impact of injury, disease, disorders, or lifestyle on movement and function. Their unique contribution to health care is to promote, restore and prolong physical independence by enhancing a client’s functional capacity. Physiotherapists encourage clients to assume responsibility for their health and participate in team approaches to health service delivery.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No. However, some insurance companies require you to submit a doctor’s referral with your claim form. You may check by calling your extended health insurance and finding out what documentation they need to reimburse your claim.

My doctor referred me to a different clinic. May I still come to the Regain Retain Physiotherapy clinic?

Absolutely. Your doctor can recommend a physiotherapy place or physiotherapist; however, you can choose the physiotherapist and the clinic that best suit your needs. We would be happy to send your doctor information about our clinic. In addition, if you agree, we will keep your doctor updated by sending details of your assessment and treatment plan and providing updates on your progress.

Do you bill directly to the insurance company?

We offer the convenience of directly billing to most insurance companies. At the time of service, you are responsible for your payment, and we conveniently direct bill to your insurance company so payment can be remitted to you promptly. Your insurance company will directly reimburse you for the coverage you are covered for. A receipt will be provided after payment is received. If we do not directly bill to your specific insurance company, you can submit the receipt to the insurance provider for reimbursement.

We highly recommend contacting your insurance provider to determine your coverage and the amount your provider will cover. Most insurance companies allow us to bill them directly; however, if your insurance company doesn’t allow us to bill directly, we will be happy to provide you with the documents you need for reimbursement.

Are your services covered by OHIP, WSIB and Motor Vehicle Accident Claims?

We do not see claims through WSIB, motor vehicle accidents, or OHIP.

What should you expect on your first visit or initial assessment?

The assessment involves thoroughly discussing your medical history, reviewing your medical reports, and performing a physical examination. We will also discuss the findings and work collaboratively, incorporating your perspective regarding the timeline, goals, and treatment plan.

This usually includes your first treatment, which may involve manual therapy, modalities, education about your condition, and a home exercise program to empower you and help you start your recovery journey.

We want to reassure you that we prioritize your comfort, dignity, and well-being throughout the process, during the assessment and follow-up treatments. Thus, we always include your perspectives while assisting you in regaining and retaining your recovery journey. Your security and peace of mind are our top priorities.

How long are the appointments?

This will depend on your condition and the body part that needs to be treated.

Injuries and conditions that just occurred or persisted for less than 3 months may be seen for an Initial Assessment lasting 40 minutes. Chronic or persistent pain conditions (symptoms that last for more than 3 months) must be seen for 60 minutes for the Initial Assessment. The physiotherapist will inform you whether you require a 20-minute or an extended (40-minute)/complex follow-up treatment.

The Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Assessment is 60 minutes, and the follow-up visit is 40 minutes. Sometimes, the 40-minute session may not be necessary, and a 20-minute session may be an option that the physiotherapist offers. The physiotherapist will discuss this with you.

What should I wear during the appointments?

We encourage you to wear loose, comfortable clothing like shorts, a loose shirt, or a tank top. Depending on the area to be examined and for easy access, the physiotherapist may ask you to remove or lift certain articles of clothing to expose the painful body part.

Feel free to bring a change of clothes if it is more convenient.

Is the internal exam mandatory for Pelvic Physiotherapy?

An internal pelvic floor exam is the gold standard for assessing pelvic floor muscle function. Although this is not mandatory, the physiotherapist can assess muscle tone, strength, and coordination directly.

Should I still attend physiotherapy if I am having my period?

Yes, a pelvic floor physiotherapy internal exam can be performed during your period. Assessing the pelvic floor muscles during menstruation can be helpful, as hormonal fluctuations can affect them. However, comfort is key. If you are uncomfortable having an internal exam during your period, you can opt for an external assessment or treatment or reschedule your appointment.
